About Consuelo Lopez-Morillas

Consuelo Lopez-Morillas is a professor emerita of Spanish and Portuguese in the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington. She received a B.A. from Bryn Mawr College in 1965 and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1974. She joined IU’s faculty in 1977 as an assistant professor of Spanish and Portuguese raising to the rank of full professor in 1994 where she taught courses on historical Spanish and romance linguistics. During her time at IU, Lopez-Morillas also served as the director of graduate studies and chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and as professor of near eastern languages and cultures. Her research interests centered on issues of Hispano-Arabic language, particularly the phenomenon of Aljamiado. She retired from IU in 2008.

Lopez-Morillas received a Fulbright award to research in Madrid, Spain in 1998 and also received fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and Spain’s Ministry of Education and Culture during her career. Since her retirement, Lopez-Morillas has turned to academic translation of books from Spanish to English.
