University Honors and Awards

Please consider submitting a nomination if you know a member of the Indiana University community who deserves the pinnacle of recognition that the university can offer for excellence in research, creative activity, teaching, or service.

Teaching

The awards in this category recognize transformative teaching by full- and part-time faculty as well as associate instructors.

Service

The awards in this category recognize outstanding service within and beyond Indiana University.

Research and Creative Activity

The award in this category is the most prestigious title offered by Indiana University.

Nomination Process

The nomination process involves multiple steps and people. For all awards, nominees are not able to nominate themselves. Instead, nominees must have their nomination submitted by someone else who serves as their nominator. Nominators and nominees are encouraged to start the nomination process many weeks or months ahead of the due date. The sections below outline the steps for nominators and nominees.

Nominators are responsible for submitting the nomination and often coordinate the preparation of the dossier. In most cases, nominators are vice provosts, vice chancellors, deans, or department chairs, but they are not required to have those roles. Nominators may have designees who work on their behalf to submit and coordinate the nomination.

Nominators are encouraged to take these steps:

Review the awards and their eligibility and nomination requirements.
Identify a nominee for an award.
Review the specific nomination form and dossier requirements for the award for which you are submitting a nomination.
Reach out the University Honors and Awards staff at uha@iu.edu with questions and request sample dossiers, as needed.

In many cases, nominees work with their nominator to prepare the dossier submitted with the nomination. Sometimes an individual who would like to be a nominee asks another individual to serve as their nominator.

Nominees are encouraged to take these steps:

Review the awards and their eligibility and nomination requirements.
Identify a nominator for an award.
Review the specific nomination form and dossier requirements for the award for which you are being nominated.

Dossier Preparation

Dossiers comprise all the materials that the award selection committee reviews in order to recommend an awardee to the President. It is critical that the nominator ensure the dossier is well developed. Although each award has unique requirements for its dossier, in general dossiers are divided into three groups of materials:

There are three materials required by almost every award, including a nomination letter, nominee statement, and CV.

These materials are required for dossiers but differ across awards depending on their focus. For example, awards focused on teaching may require a summary and reflection on course evaluations, and an award focused on civic engagement may require letters of support from external partners.

These materials are not required but could add to the case for selecting the nominee.

Selection

Each award is overseen by a committee who reviews each nomination and recommends finalists to the President. Committee members are appointed by the President.
